This won’t be a formal review because I’m not a model-making expert. I’m just writing down some personal opinions.
I bought a HG Gundam 00 SKY model kit at last year’s Kits For Kids charity sale in Sep 2019, mainly because it was selling at a ridiculously low price. Since it was cheap, and the money went to charity, I bought one just to try.
During the lockdown / “circuit breaker” period, I had some free time, so I took it out and built it little by little, in short 10-minute sessions over a 2-week period (20 May to 02 June 2020).
Here is the completed model only using the stickers that came with the kit. No paint and no panel lining.
Because I bought 00 SKY super cheap, I didn’t want to spend 2-3 times of the cost on proper hobby nippers. $15+ for a pair of nippers is RIDICULOUS! I used a pair of small wire cutters from my father’s tool collection, a nail file to sand down the nubs a little, and a needle to position the tiny stickers.
- Wire cutters: replacement for entry nippers
- Nail file: replacement for sandpaper
- Needle: replacement for tweezers
This is my first time building a modern HG Gunpla. I previously built one SD Gundam and one vintage 1/144 Mercurius (Gundam Wing) model kit. Compared to the older pre-HG kits, the modern HG design is composed of a lot more pieces, but it also includes a lot more articulation for posing.
Articulation is very good for a basic entry-level model kit: shoulders, arm rotation, elbows, wrist, waist, hips, knees and ankles. The wing-like shoulder thrusters and backpack also have many joints and freedom of movement.
The instruction manual has clear and accurate drawings and detailed step-by-step instructions. I had no problems following it. No glue is required as everything is snap-fit and precisely moulded.
Overall, the HG Gundam is of good quality, looks nice even without painting, and is easy to build even for absolute beginners.
There are some odd features of the 00 SKY though. I haven’t seen the Gundam Build Divers anime series so I have no idea if any of this is relevant.
The feet can transform into “high heels” but it makes the Gundam quite unstable:
“Is that a beam saber in your codpiece or are you just happy to see me?” *pull* (Note: photo taken without backpack & shoulder thrusters)
Oh dear, Freudian weapons. Mecha designers, please try not to do such things.
1/144 scale Gunpla weapons can be used by 1/12 human figures like Figma and Obitsu11! The HG Gundams are about the same height as Figma figures, approximately 13cm.
Here is Racing Miku 2013 EV MIRAI (bootleg) with 00 SKY’s beam saber. It fits nicely in her ‘grip’ hand.
And here is Kogami Akira (Kyun-Chara by Banpresto on Obitsu11 body) with 00 SKY’s beam saber and beam rifle. Just the right size!
There’s no need to stick to just one brand when items of similar size and scale are compatible.
