RSVP Etiquette and COVID-19

RSVP etiquette in Singapore is lousy, especially in this age of internet and mobile connectivity. People register for events and simply don’t show up, without bothering to withdraw or explain their absence. Sometimes the attendee quota will be filled with such no-shows, resulting in responsible participants not having the chance to attend. Others just show up unannounced and expect to be allowed to join.

The current COVID-19 pandemic is an opportunity for event organisers to seriously enforce RSVP requirements. A confirmed attendance list makes contact tracing easier, should anything happen.

Organisers should record and blacklist no-shows, and refuse entry to gatecrashers. Punish irresponsible behaviour, and reward good RSVP etiquette!
