Even though my blog title is “Mad Science Laboratory”, I haven’t really posted much in the way of science-related content. For shame!
With the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19, now is a good time to remind everyone to WASH THEIR HANDS. Yes, there exist some disgusting folks who don’t wash their hands after using the toilet (eeww).
Of course, EFFECTIVE hand washing is more than just holding your hands under running water for 2 seconds. That’s not washing, that’s wetting.
The 7-step handwashing sequence used by medical and food industry workers is illustrated below. (Source: https://www.healthhub.sg/live-healthy/471/keepyourhandsclean)
Make sure to scrub your fingertips and under the nails (step #6), those are the major contact surfaces and microbe-hiding areas. Also, short nails are more hygienic. Don’t wear any stick-on nail decorations for now, those provide hiding places for microbes.
If you ask a medical professional, they are going to say that washing hands properly is better than using sanitiser. You’ll also observe than sanitiser is only used when they are short of time or when no washing facilities are available.
Why is washing better?
- Microbes hide under and inside physical contaminants like dirt and grease. Sanitiser won’t remove those, and it won’t penetrate the contamination layer.
- Washing hands gets rid of contamination via the soap, physical scrubbing action and water rinse.
- Cheapest and simplest method of hygiene, no special antibacterial formulas are required, even hand soap, bath soap or detergent will be useful.
